Nitrous Oxide

Many patients experience some level of anxiety before an appointment, which can make it harder to relax in the chair.
At Glynwood Park Dental Care, we offer nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas, as a gentle and effective way to help you feel more comfortable while receiving the care you need.

What Is Nitrous Oxide Sedation?
Nitrous oxide is a colorless, slightly sweet-smelling gas that’s mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose. As you breathe normally, the calming effects begin within minutes.
You stay awake, aware, and in control the entire time, but feelings of tension, fear, or discomfort fade away.
Is Nitrous Oxide Safe?
Nitrous oxide has been safely used in dentistry for decades. The gas is carefully balanced, with patients receiving a higher concentration of oxygen than nitrous oxide. You’ll continue breathing on your own and remain in control of your reflexes.
Once the mask is removed, the effects wear off quickly, and you can carry on with your day as normal.
Benefits of Nitrous Oxide Sedation
- Relaxation begins within minutes
- Effects can be easily adjusted during your visit
- Wears off rapidly with no lingering grogginess
- Safe for your heart and lungs
- Reduces gag reflex for smoother treatment
- May create mild amnesia, helping ease memories of the procedure
Who Can Use Nitrous Oxide?
Most patients are good candidates for nitrous oxide sedation, including children and adults. However, it may not be recommended for individuals with certain respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, or ongoing breathing difficulties.
If you’re unsure, your dentist can discuss whether nitrous oxide is right for you and even offer a brief trial during your appointment.
How to Get Ready for Your Nitrous Oxide Appointment
- Eat lightly before your visit and avoid a heavy meal.
- Wear comfortable clothing to help you relax.
- Share your complete medical history, especially any respiratory conditions.
- Ask questions beforehand so you feel confident about the process.
