What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are custom restorations made from durable materials such as porcelain, gold, or composite resin. An inlay fits neatly within the grooves of your tooth, while an onlay covers one or more of the tooth’s cusps (the raised points).

Porcelain has become a popular choice because it matches your natural teeth best, but gold and composite continue to provide dependable results.

How Are Inlays and Onlays Different from Fillings?

Fillings are designed to repair smaller areas of decay and are applied directly to the tooth during a single visit. However, when more than half of the tooth’s biting surface is damaged, a filling may not provide enough strength.

Inlays and onlays are fabricated outside the mouth, then bonded into place, providing long-lasting performance and reliable support.

How Are Inlays and Onlays Applied?

Inlays and onlays usually require two visits:

• First visit: The decayed or damaged portion of the tooth is removed, and the area is carefully shaped. An impression is taken and sent to a dental lab, and a temporary restoration is placed for protection. ‍
• Second visit: The temporary is removed, and your custom inlay or onlay is tried in for fit and comfort. Once perfected, it’s bonded to your tooth with a strong resin and polished for a natural finish.
