Tooth Extractions

Sometimes a tooth cannot be saved and removing it becomes the healthiest option for your smile.
At Glynwood Park Dental Care, we perform tooth extractions with precision and care, ensuring your comfort throughout the process while helping you plan for long-term oral health.

When Are Tooth Extractions Necessary?
Teeth may need to be removed for several reasons, including:
- Severe decay that cannot be repaired
- Advanced periodontal disease
- Broken or damaged teeth beyond restoration
- Poor positioning in the mouth, such as impacted teeth
- Preparing for orthodontic treatment
Whenever possible, we will explore alternatives to extraction and discuss restorative options for replacing the tooth to prevent future complications.
What Happens During a Tooth Extraction?
Before removal, we apply a local anesthetic to numb the tooth, jawbone, and surrounding gums. While you may feel pressure, you should not feel pain. The pressure comes from your dentist rocking the tooth back and forth to widen the socket and loosen the tooth for removal.
Some teeth, especially those with curved roots or that are firmly anchored, may need sectioning. The tooth is divided into smaller sections, which are then removed one at a time.
Once the tooth is extracted, the socket is cleaned and checked to ensure no fragments remain. A gauze pad is placed over the area to control bleeding and help a blood clot form, beginning the healing process.
If you experience any sharp pain at any point, please let us know so we can make adjustments.
Care Instructions After an Extraction
Healing properly is essential. Following these guidelines will help protect the extraction site and promote recovery:
- Bite firmly on a gauze pad for 30–45 minutes to help a blood clot form.
- Avoid disturbing the clot—don't rinse vigorously, smoke, use straws, or brush near the area for 72 hours.
- Limit exercise for the first 24 hours to reduce bleeding.
- Apply an ice pack to minimize swelling.
- Take prescribed medications as directed and finish antibiotics if given.
- Stay hydrated and eat soft, nutritious foods until comfortable.
- Resume your regular oral hygiene routine after 24 hours, brushing gently around the site.
If you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding, or swelling beyond two to three days, contact our office right away.
